The Gaylod Herald Times, founded in 1875, is the oldest business in Otsego County, and, in fact, was founded in the same year as the county itself. A number of individuals have operated the newspaper over the years. James L Grisso, who joined the Gaylord Herald Times in 1968, retired in December 2007 as publisher. Doug Caldwell of Petoskey was the publisher of the Gaylord Herald Times, a subsidiary of Schurz Communications, Inc. which purchased the paper in 2006. Since then, the Gaylord Herald Times advanced from a weekly publication to twice weekly, establishing Tuesday and Friday as publication days. The newspaper also publishes a companion shopping guide, MarketPlace, on Saturaday. The Gaylord Herald Times serves all of Otsego County as well as parts of Antrim, Cheboygan, Crawford, Montmorency and Oscoda counties. Throughout the years, the business produces or contributes to a number of other publications, including the Gaylord/Ostego County Guide, PrimeTimes, AlpenTimes and many more. It is all co-publisher of the PhoneGuide, a regional telephone director serving several counties in Northern Michigan. Since 1968, the Gaylord newspaper has won more than 400 national and state awards for journalistic excellence.
